Usages range from near-uniform recruitment of different codons (limited by amino acid stoichiometry of encoded proteomes) to two distinct, non-uniform recruitments of nearly exclusive subsets of different codons. Intermediate usages are described as a variation from one distinct nonuniform usage to the other that involves joint, proportionate changes in the frequencies of most different codons. The two distinct non-uniform usages define two distinct genetic codes of which one employs A/U, and the other C/G, as third bases.
